Contra dancing is a living American tradition, originating in New England over a two centuries ago, and continuing too evolve. There are now contra dances held in all 50 states, and many countries throughout the world (see the links tab to find them).
For an idea of how a contra dance looks and sounds, view this movie (2 MB). Live music, from a variety of bands, is one of best features of contradancing. See the Music tab above.
We dance with a partner in a larger set of dancers, and usually change partners every dance, so you don't need to come with one. The Riverside Contra Dance welcomes old and young dancers
Every First Sunday afternoon starts with teaching the basics (at 3:30), and every dance starts with a walk-throughof the its figures. Contra dances have no complex steps, and you are continually prompted by the caller, so learning is easy.
Links to other contra dance descriptions and resources can be found in the links tab above.
